How AI Is Impacting Entry-Level Programming Jobs

The Times of India reports that US computer science graduates are finding their entry-level job prospects hindered by AI. Hiring processes increasingly favor AI tools over human candidates, drastically shrinking the availability of junior roles in tech.

Meanwhile, Reuters highlights that entry-level coding positions have dropped by 50% since 2019, with experts predicting AI could eliminate half of all white-collar entry-level jobs within the next 1–5 years.

Cursor: A New AI-Powered Coding Tool

In a recent The Verge "Decoder" podcast episode, Anysphere’s Cursor—an AI-enhanced coding assistant—was showcased. The tool integrates with models from OpenAI and Anthropic, offering intelligent autocompletion and task delegation within development environments. Its CEO predicts that in the next 6–12 months, as much as 20–25% of a professional engineer’s work may be fully delegated to AI.

Computer Science Degrees Still Matter, Says OpenAI’s Chairman

Despite the surge in AI coding tools, Bret Taylor, chairman of OpenAI, reassures that computer science degrees remain valuable. According to him, the future will emphasize systems thinking and conceptual understanding—such as algorithmic complexity and cache optimization—over simply writing code. He envisions engineers as operators of AI coding systems rather than manual coders.
