Solar Storm Disruptions and AI Summit at IIT Kanpur

A powerful solar storm hurtled toward Earth at nearly 2.1 million km/h (21 lakh km/h), triggered by a rare “cannibal” coronal mass ejection—one CME overtook and merged with another, amplifying the solar eruption. Originating from sunspot region AR 4199, following an M2.7-class flare on August 30, the combined burst reached Earth late on September 1 and continued into September 2. Its impact compressed the planet’s magnetic field, triggering geomagnetic storms potent enough to endanger satellites, disrupt power grids, and light up the skies with enhanced auroras around the globe



In India, IIT Kanpur welcomed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to inaugurate Samanvay 2025, a two-day corporate–academia summit centered on artificial intelligence and sustainable technology. The summit, running September 2–3, aims to align AI research with industry needs and promote real-world applications. Keynote speeches include TCS CTO Harrick Vin, and the event will also see a Memorandum of Understanding signed between TCS and a startup. Discussions span AI, sustainability, cybersecurity, and the role of corporate social responsibility in supporting translational research—research that can be rapidly moved into practical use.

Amid the fading geomagnetic disturbance triggered by the cannibal CME hitting Earth on September 1–2, space weather experts report that minor G1-class storms may still occur today (September 3), as residual charged particles continue to ripple through Earth's magnetosphere—which remains disrupted even as the main storm subsides
