Emerging job roles in engineering

The engineering employment landscape in India is shifting. While computer science has long dominated, there is now growing opportunity in fields like green energy, materials, microelectronics and defence-engineering — driven by sustainability goals and national security priorities.At the same time, firms are increasingly recruiting for “AI-first” roles: data architecture, generative AI, machine-learning specialists, automation engineers. 

Industry-academia synergy in defence tech

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has handed over 12 technology-transfer agreements to industry partners (including MSMEs) in Bengaluru, covering advanced defence systems such as electronic-warfare suites, laser guidance, satellite comms.This underscores a push toward indigenisation and closer industry-academia linkages in high-tech engineering.


  Skills and employability in engineering education

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched a programme called PROJECT PRACTICE (“Advancing Critical Thinking, Industry Connect & Employability”) to reform ~1,000 engineering colleges (mostly in tier-2 and tier-3 areas). The aim is to benefit over half-a-million students and 10,000 faculty by upgrading pedagogy to meet modern engineering skill demands.

Advances in materials and process engineering 

Globally, engineering research continues to push boundaries: for instance, scientists developed a new chromium-molybdenum-silicon superalloy that withstands extreme heat yet remains ductile — potentially replacing nickel-based alloys. On the process side, the recent eighth International Symposium on Joining of Materials (SOJOM 2025) in Trichy focused on welding, robotics and process optimisation for power-plant fabrication.

Computer Science Among Majors With Highest Unemployment In US

Computer science has been one of the most popular college majors in recent years. Many students choose it believing it offers strong job prospects and high salaries. However, recent data reveals a different story in the United States: many graduates are struggling to find jobs in the field. According to a report by Newsweek, based on data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, computer science ranks seventh among undergraduate majors with the highest unemployment rate-currently at 6.1 percent. This places it just behind other majors like physics (7.8 percent).
