Microsoft fixes long-standing multi-monitor limitation
Microsoft has released an update (KB5065789) to Windows 11 which finally allows full taskbar functionality on secondary monitors—i.e. on non-primary displays.Previously, features like accessing the Notification Center via the taskbar were restricted to the primary display. With this change, clicking the date/time on any monitor’s taskbar will open the notification flyout.
Impact on user workflows & gaming / performance
The update also improves performance in multi-monitor setups, especially when the monitors have different refresh rates. For users who often span windows, drag content across screens, or use secondary displays for tools/notifications, this is a meaningful usability upgrade. It addresses a criticism that Windows 11 didn’t fully match the flexibility users had become accustomed to in Windows 10.
The feature is in staged rollout now, with broader availability expected in the October monthly update (around October 14), unless held up by last-minute issues. However, not all “classic” taskbar customizations are back: for example, repositioning the taskbar to the top or sides is still locked to the bottom in Windows 11.So while this is a solid improvement, some constraints remain.
Broader context & stock update
This improvement is part of Microsoft’s incremental strategy to gradually re-add or refine features in Windows 11, in response to user feedback. As for Microsoft’s stock (MSFT), here is its current status:
